Mathematical Cluster Problems
Case Overview
This case focuses on a fifth-grade classroom from a suburban public school. The low-achieving, tracked math class of 15 students is working through a lesson based on the Investigations in Number, Data and Space curriculum. Seven of the students in this class have an IEP for speech and language issues, learning disabilities, and developmental disabilities. The teacher is a general education teacher with training in mathematics leadership.
Lesson Details

The math lesson consist of a teacher-led mini-lesson on multiplication cluster problems, small group work time during which students work on a cluster problem, a teacher-guided large group discussion reviewing the cluster problem, and another small group work time during which students develop story problems for a number sentence. The focal students include two boys and a girl. One of the boys is autistic, and the other has an emotional disability. The girl is an English Language Learner with expressive language difficulties.
