Framework of the Inquiry



The framework of both the inquiry in which the schools engage and the Digital School Portfolio(c) is represented as a jigsaw puzzle. Each of the three components consist of elements, and are supported by a set of key questions.

1. Inquiring into Teaching and Learning

  1. Instructional Strategies
    What instructional strategies are most commonly used in the school, and how do these meet the students' learning needs?
  2. Learning Environment
    How do the school and classroom environments support student learning?
  3. Learning Technologies
    How is technology used to engage students in learning, and to enhance their achievement?
  4. Management of Teaching and Learning
    How does the school ensure that the learning needs of all students are known and met?


2. Inquiring into Student Learning, Progress, and Achievement

  1. Assessment of Student Progress and Achievement
    How does the school assess the progress and achievement of its students; how does it use this information; how well are the students doing?
  2. Learning Standards and Curriculum Design
    What should students know, understand, be able to do, and how is the curriculum organized to achieve this?
  3. Student Work
    What do students write, make, and read; what do they discuss; how do they act, and what activities do they take part in which show what they know, understand, and are able to do?
  4. Support for Student Learning
    What assistance is provided to help students overcome obstacles to learning, and how successful is it?



3. Inquiring into Schools as Learning Communities

  1. Community Engagement
    What are the wider communities with which the school is engaged; how does the school engage with these communities; how do the school's relationships with them benefit the students' learning?
  2. Human Resources
    How does the school help all staff develop tyheir capacity to become more effective in their work; in what ways, and how successfully, does this improve student learning?
  3. Mission and Organization
    What is the school's mission; how does the way in which the school is organized help to achieve that mission; how does the school develop its capacity to become more effective?
  4. School Culture
    Do the values of the school support student learning, continuous improvements in professional practice, and the development of leadership and collaboration within the school community?
