John Calhoun North Elementary School is located within the East Garfield community. The student population is 99.8% African-American and .2% Caucasian. We serve six hundred and seventy-five (675) children in grades Pre-kindergarten through eighth.
Eighty-two percent of our students are from low-income female headed households. We work collaboratively with Marillac House and Metropolitan Family Services, two social service providers in our community, to provide our students and their families with the supports they need.
Calhoun is a QUEST school. We are currently networking with other QUEST schools, critiquing our teaching practices and examining student work. Through our QUEST involvement, we have restructured the school day to provide more time for professional development and teacher collaboration. We are now more focused on instruction that emphasizes higher order thinking skills.
Our involvement with the School Change and Inquiry Initiative will help us to tell our story. We will utilize a digital portfolio to share our work with others. The Inquiry Initiative has provided us with the necessary technological resources to make the portfolio a reality. It is also assisting us in the examination of our strengths and weaknesses relative to the management of teaching and student learning.
