Stephen T. Mather High School

Stephen Tyng Mather High School is a general high school which serves a widely diverse, multi-ethnic population of over 1,950 students. Mather is a multi-lingual, multi-cultural school. The Home Language Survey shows that 65% of our students speak a language other than English at home. Over 50% of our students have been in an English-as-a-Second Language Program during their school years. Students in the bilingual program are served by teachers who are proficient in the Assyrian, Chinese/Cantonese, Gujarati, Arabic, Russian, Servo-Croatian, Spanish, and Urdu languages. Students whose home languages are one of the other fifty home languages of our community are served by teachers of English-as-a-Second language classes. The faculty and staff reflect the multi-cultural backgrounds of our students and serve as translators for parents and students, role models, mentors, and sponsors for ethnic clubs. Our spring Ethnic Fest involves all students and staff as we celebrate our diversity.

Mather provides an educational program that includes classes for gifted and talented students in academics and the fine arts. We provide a comprehensive program for all students and integrate computer technology into the curriculum. Mather also provides extensive services for its special education students in programs for the emotionally disturbed, learning disabled, and physically challenged. Our Junior Academy provides mentors and tutoring services for all ninth and tenth grade students. Advisory teachers serve as a link between the home and the school.

Mather High School is a member of the Coalition of Essential Schools, the Illinois Alliance of Essential Schools, and the National School Reform Faculty. As part of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, Mather is committed to creating a school where structure, culture, pedagogy, and community work together to foster student achievement that exceeds national norms. We are also in the vanguard of the Critical Friend Groups which is supported by the Annenberg Institute for School Reform; colleagues reflect upon and improve teacher practice and student work. The entire faculty is involved in intensive staff development activities focused on improving classroom practice.
