Edward H. White Career Academy

Edward H. White Career Academy is located on the far south side of Chicago. There are 285 students in grades K through 8 and 25 staff members. The population is 2.2% Hispanic and 97.8% Black. The community is predominantly blue-collar. The school emphasizes the exploration of various careers through preparing each student to become a productive member of their community in a multi-cultural, diversified, technological society. Our emphasis is upon high academic expectations, character development, and educating the whole child. We highlight staff development, student centered learning and parent community involvement.

Edward White has formed partnerships with the Teachers Academy of Math and Science, the Chicago Teachers Union Quest Center, Junior Achievement, University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Program, Direct Access Brokerage Firm, Northwestern's Kellogg School of Business, Total Quality Schools, Christ Universal Temple, and the Family Study Institute.

Edward White is involved in the Chicago Systemic Initiative, Chicago State University, the MacArthur Foundation's Inquiry Initiative, the Annenberg Small Schools Grant, the League of Schools Reaching Out, Chicago Foundation of Small Grants, Institute for Responsive Education, the Caring Project, the W.I.S.E. Program, and the Family Study Institute.

The clubs at the school include chess, golf, cheerleaders, girls and boys basketball, peer tutors, conflict managers, beta club, student council, safety patrol, playleaders, chorus, Stock Market, Young Astronauts, and Young Authors.

As a Quest school we were given funds to realize our vision of student centered learning with parent and community involvement based on high academic expectations. Quest provides workshops and resources for staff and parents. They also function as part of our leadership and career advisory teams.

We are involved with the Inquiry Initiative through preparation of a digital portfolio which includes gathering data to support the implementation of our vision. Grants and awards received include the Career Development Grant, Pyramid Award, Whitman Award, Kizzie Award, Phi Delta Kappa Award, Wisconsin Dairy Council, Illinois Technology Grant, AT&T Grant, Mattel Award, Ameritech Great Books Grant, Project Success and Community Volunteer and Illinois State Board of Education Grants.
