Carter G. Woodson South Elementary School
The Carter G. Woodson South Elementary School serves 520 pre-K-4th grade students in Chicago's Grand Boulevard Community. One hundred percent of our students are in the Federal Chapter I index. Approximately 80% are residents of the Washington Park Homes, A Chicago Housing Authority development.
The Carter G WoodsonSouth Elementary School vision statement holds that we strive to develop "Successful Students Moving Toward Productive Adulthood." Our school community pledges to foster in every child educational success, self-esteem, independent thinking, and the ability to function in all cultures. We believe that all children can be responsible learners; therefore, we function as a community of learners, with students, parents, and teachers working together to achieve this goal. We employ a language-based thematic curriculum that extends literacy across all subject areas as our students explore their communities and the broader world.
Our school community is engaged in several successful initiatives aimed at enriching the curriculum and improving staff development. Ongoing academic projects include the creation of an African/African-American centered curriculum, the development of themes that integrate subject areas while addressing state learning outcomes, and the creation of an after-school tutoring program for targeted students in first through fourth grades. The Erikson Institute of Early Childhood Education has assisted us in our overall instructional program. Summer week-long instructional meetings give teachers an opportunity to review "what works" and what "needs work" and to begin to plan for a successful school year.
Our school schedule has been adapted to allow for restructured days for professional development, instructional planning, and hands-on workshops. We are currently working on increasing staff and parent participation in staff development. Carter G. Woodson South is a "Quest" (Chigago Teachers' Union Professional Development Project) school. The Quest Center staff has been instrumental in supporting both our academic and staff development programs.
