There are Different Types of Images
Activity:
1. Ask students to brainstorm a list of different kinds of images.
2. As a whole class exercise, compare lists and categorize the different types into four major categories:
A) "photographs" (i.e., images taken directly from life, not collages or digitally altered.)
B) "drawings" (i.e., images made "by hand", that is, either drawn or painted or collated or digitally altered.)
C) "maps" (i.e., images representing spatial relationships, whether geographic, conceptual, such as a concept map, or schematic, such as a plan or blueprint.)
D) "graphs" (i.e., images representing quantitative relationships, whether pictographs or line graphs or plots.)
3. If there are image types that do not fit into this category system, create separate categories or add a "miscellaneous" category. Tell students that there are many ways to categorize types of images, and that the categories used in these applets are just one way to do it.
