There are Different Types of Sound

Types of Sound

Activity:

1. Ask students to brainstorm a list of different kinds of sounds.

2. As a whole class exercise, compare lists and categorize the different types into four major categories:

     A) "background" (i.e., ambient sounds that might be heard in the same place as the image if you captured sound without pointing a mike to any particular object.)

     B) "speech" (i.e., sounds made by people using words.)

     C) "music" (i.e., phrases of instrumental music.)

     D) "effects" (i.e., sounds made by objects or familiar from games.)

3. If there are sound types that do not fit into this category system, create separate categories or add a "miscellaneous" category. Tell students that there are many ways to categorize types of sounds, and that the categories used in these applets are just one way to do it.

The Main Idea

The Exploring Sounds applet showed four types of sounds, background sounds,  speech, music and sound effects. These are the four types of sounds that will appear in all the applets. They can be considered categories and can be subdivided into other categories.
