Playing With Sound Uses

Sounds Storyboard application

Activity:

1. Ask students to open the Sound Storyboard applet. Tell them to click on each of the image cells on the storyline to see the sequence as a whole first. They will quickly notice that the captions are always the same in each image set. They simply serve to remind them of the purpose for which they are being asked to select a sound.

2. Ask students to listen to some of the sounds available for each of the four types of sounds. They can name the sounds to make it easier to remember which ones they want to use.

3. Ask students to select an sound to go with each of the four parts of the image set by clicking on the SELECT button. They can change their minds by deleting a sound and selecting a different one.

4. When they have selected four sounds for an image set, ask them to click on HEAR STORY to see if it tells the story they imagined.

5. Different individual students or small groups can select different images to layer with sound - or they can do all of them.

6. Compare different stories told with the same images but different sounds. Ask students to explain why they considered their choice of sounds appropriate for the purpose defined by the applet.

The Main Idea

To explore how sounds can be used for different purposes, students can take a set of images and support a particular meaning by adding a sound with a defined purpose. The first part of each storyboard (or image set) asks students to provide context with a sound, the second image asks them to illustrate something in the picture with a sound, the third asks them to express an opinion with a sound and the last one asks them to decorate the image with a sound.
