There are Different Types of Movement

Sounds Storyboard application

Activity:

1. Discuss how PowerPoint lets you do three kinds of movement:

A) Moving Objects - images (whether imported or clip art) can be moved across the screen and re-sized.

B) Moving Text - words (as well as letters) can be brought to the screen one at a time or following a path.

C) Transitions - the movement from slide to slide can occur with a range of visual effects, indicating direction, zooming in an out, and images or words re-grouping in new ways, such as bars or dissolves.

2. Discuss how movement on screen is very dramatic and should be used to support the message of the slide rather than to distract from it. You might want to make a PowerPoint slide to illustrate how words popping in one at a time can become distracting, even though it is fun to watch - but that you end up watching the words rather than paying attention to their meaning.

The Main Idea

There is no separate applet for this, but when introducing students to the Using Movement applet, you might want to discuss the different kinds of movement possible in PowerPoint with them. Students love using the animation and transition features, but often spend a lot of time animating words and objects without any clear purpose, which can distract from the presentation.
