ATE and No Child Left Behind
Building Expert Teachers
In order to meet the goals of No Child Left Behind, we need to assure that a core group of expert teachers exists in each school to share instructional leadership and to promote high achievement across the school. The Academyâs aim is to develop cadres of teacher leaders who can help shape excellence in their schools and districts.
Student Work as Data
Some No Child Left Behind state plans say that student work is an acceptable form of data. At the heart of the Academy is a focus on math, science, and reading student work that comes from teachersâ own classrooms and provides evidence for teachersâ analysis of practice and reflection of how well they are teaching and how well students are learning. Teachers begin with standards and high stakes assessments and concentrate on the work of their own classroom to ensure that their students achieve to high standards.
Improving Student Achievement
Through the Evidence to Excellence process, teachers examine the evidence of student work to develop new practices that improve student achievement. In the Academy program, teachers participate in workshops and online seminars that enrich their content knowledge and teaching practice. The overall program promotes continuous improvement by helping teachers work together to establish their understanding of high standards and how to help students reach them. The Academy and the Evidence to Excellence process promote trust among teachers and the capacity to work collaboratively to improve instruction for all students.
