Brooklyn Technical High School is one of New York City's specialized high schools. Its student population reflects the diversity that New York City offers. It is one of the few high schools in the United States to offer majors in engineering and other technical field. "Tech" Students elect a major at the close of their sophmore year and remain in their selected major for two years. The pre-college Mechanical Engineering program integrates math and science with hands-on applications of technology. Students work cooperatively in groups and undertake two-week long joint projects that involve creating devices to scale. For example one project asks students to design and create, to specifications a simple weighing machine using wood, gears, and other "approved" objects. Students must not exceed a specific budget.
In addition to the mechanical engineering course requirements,
students are required to take English, history, physics, and mathematics courses. At Brooklyn Tech the basic series of
mathematics courses includes Sequential 1, 2, and 3. Each course in the series (depending on the level) is comprised of
some combination of topics including: number systems, algebra, geometry, trigonomety, logic, probability, statistics, and
functions. Some students opt to take pre-calculus and calculus after they have completed Sequential 1, 2, and 3, but while
it is preferred that students take these advanced mathematics courses, they are not required.
